摘要

In 1882, when a band of sailors from the British ship Flying Fish left a football on the pier at Inchon in Korea they could not possibly have anticipated the consequences. Locals began to take up the game and now, 120 years later, South Korea and co-World Cup host Japan are filled with football fever. Football ― which is called soccer in the U.S. ― developed slowly in Asia. Korea's K-League became the continent's first professional football league as kte as 1983 and Japan's J-League was formed 10 years later ― but now it is making up for lost time. In Korea, the nation has mobilized behind the home side, and in Japan, therd is wide-spread hope that the national team will be the first from Asia to advance to the second round of the tounament.
