Manila―Andersen Worldwide's affili-are in the Philippines said it will merge with the local operations of Ernst & Young International, bringing to an end a battle for one of Asia's oldest and most prestigious accounting firms. The deal to merge with SGV & Co. is a coup for Ernst & Young, which has won a firm that dominates its market in a way few firms do. Established domestically in 1946 and built into a regional powerhouse, SGV ceded control of its pan-Asian offices when it paired with Andersen in 1985. SGV remains the leader in the Philippines; its 51 partners oversee auditing for 40% of the nation's top 1,000 companies, including the local offices of some big multinational companies such as Pepsi whose global parents use a different accounting firm in most other countries. SGV per-forned the inventory of former first lady Imelda Marcos's thousands of pairs of shoes when she and the former nresident were run out of the palace.
