摘要

When friends ask Anthony Salim how he is doing these days, the Indonesian tycoon often gives a one-word reply: "Surviving." Now, Salim-controlled First Pacific Co.'s plan to sell stakes in its key Philippine assets for more than $600 million could give 52-year-old Mr. Salim the means to begin expanding a family empire battered by the 1997-98 financial crisis and burnish his image as one of Southeast Asia's shrewdest businessmen. Under the plan, First Pacific will sell stakes in Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. and a property concern to a new joint-venture company 66.7%-owned by Philippine businessman John Gokongwei.
