摘要

Manila―The International Monetaky Fund said that despite the Philippines' current fiscal slipping, it believes the government will take the necessary measures to ensure the budget deficit ceiling for 2002 won't be exceeded. "There's no doubt that if measures are implemented, there's a good chance that they can meet it," said Joshua Felman, who led an IMF mission to Manila to review the latest economic developments under a monitoring program with the government. The IMF's optimism is in marked contrast to the belief of many in the market, including Moody's Investors Service, that the government will have a tough time meeting its 2002 fiscal target. "The Philippine government is determined to solve its fiscal problems and if you ask me if they are improving―yes they are," Mr. Felman said.
