Remote sensing of vegetation in the calabrian region

Estimate of healthy vegetation is an important parameter for hydrological and forecasting models and the purpose of this work is to study vegetation's changes in the Calabrian region (the most southern region of the Italian peninsula), investigating also possible correlations between vegetation indices and hydrological data. Two vegetation indices (NDVI, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, and SAVI, Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index) have been chosen to quantitatively assess the greenness of the examined area. Temporal changes on a monthly basis for 1 year (April 200 I/March 2002) have been analyzed on an area of interest approximately 120 km x 90 km large, using Advanced very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) LAC data (1.1km pixel size). Different analysis techniques have been tested. In order to select the optimum spatial/temporal scale for vegetation studies based on surveys at local scale, the NDVI vegetation indices obtained from different sensor types on a same date have been compared. Finally, considering an experimental basin area (29 km~2), a classification of different regions considering discrete vegetation index classes has been carried out and the results have been compared with a land use classification obtained from air-photo interpretation.
