Did Zion Williamson Give Nike's Stock a Flat Tire?

On 20 February 2019, prospective first round National Basketball Association (NBA) draft pick Zion Williamson injured himself during Duke's nationally televised game versus rival North Carolina when his Nike sneaker ripped. News reports the next day blamed the Williamson sneaker blowout for a drop in Nike's stock market value, presumably because the blowout adversely affected the perceived quality of Nike sneakers. Similar to previous research examining the stock market effects of Michael Jordan's retirement from and return to the NBA (Crawford and Niendorf, American Business Review, 1999), we analyzed whether Williamson's sneaker blowout affected Nike's stock price. Also considered was the effect of Williamson's injury on share prices of Adidas and Under Armour since other major publicly traded shoe manufacturers might have experienced an increase in sales if customers' perceptions of Nike's shoe quality were negatively affected by the Williamson injury.
