Wide income differences among U.S. households are a familiar fact of life. Household incomes range from those of multimillionaires to some as low as can be found in any country. U.S. household income is updated annually and the latest information can be presented to students in the form of tables and summary statistics (see, for example, U.S. Census Bureau, 2010 American Community Survey 1-Year Estimates, Table Sl901.) Income limits for each fifth of all households can then be used to derive Lorenz curves and Gini ratios. For some students, however, looking at a tiring series of tables of income statistics is a bit like looking at the scramble of letters in a bowl of alphabet soup. So, what's a principles instructor to do?
