Economic Globalization and the Technology Gap between Nations

Previous studies show mixed support for the hypothesis that globalization widens the income gap between rich and poor countries (See Milanovic, Journal of World Economics, 2006 for a survey). We argue that previous studies have three limitations. (1) Previous studies only focused on the impact of globalization on growth (e.g. Dreher, Applied Economics, 2006). More specifically, they did not extensively examine the impact of economic globalization on the technology gap between nations in both theoretical and empirical points of view. (2) Previous studies did not estimate the impact of economic globalization on Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries (e.g., International Monetary Fund, World Economic Outlook, October 2007). (3) Many previous studies used individual sub-dimensions of economic globalization (e.g., Dollar and Kraay, World Bank Discussion Papers, 2001). The study contributes to the empirical literature by overcoming the above limitations of previous studies. To our knowledge, this is the first time to investigate economic globalization as a channel of the technology gap between GCC countries and Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries.
