Review of aircraft measurements over China: aerosol, atmospheric photochemistry, and cloud

Aircraft measurements have been widely used in field programs to provide in-situ observations of cloud, aerosol, and atmospheric chemistry, in order to improve the scientific understanding of the structure, dynamics, and thermodynamics of cloud, and to comprehend human influences on the weather/climate system. China has experienced heavy air pollution over the past decades, with particulate matter (PM) being one of the top pollutants. To understand the cause of aerosol pollution in China and comprehend its influence on cloud, precipitation, and atmospheric chemistry, a significant number of aircraft measurements were conducted. In this work, we review the progress in aircraft measurements conducted over China. This review focuses on the following issues: (1) physical and chemical properties of aerosol in the troposphere, including aerosol size distribution, chemical composition, and new particle formation; (2) atmospheric trace gases and photochemistry, along with the aging process of gases during vertical transport; (3) influence of aerosols on cloud and precipitation.
