In evolutionary terms, our bodies are nothing but vessels to nurture, protect and ensure the means of survival of the species - the germ line. Germ cells are the means by which we pass our DNA or genes on to the next generation. All of the non-germ cells (somatic cells) cooperate to form our body, but ultimately they die. The most important job of the somatic cells is to keep the germ cells healthy.
