The world is waiting for a devas-tating pandemic of bird flu, but will it come? "I think most people in the field believe that it is likely we will have a pandemic," says Alan Hampson, a Melbourne virologist who is Deputy Director of the World Health Organisation's Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Influenza. "We had three last century and there is evidence if we go back through history that there were pandemics in previous centuries as well."
