Myths are stories that provide meaning to the world, but because of their power they can also be very harmful if built on false premises. Few areas in the study of science and society have as much mythology as the so-called war between Christianity and science, especially in the interaction between geology and Christianity. These myths obscure both our understanding of how historical events have unfolded and how they affect us today. The warfare myth says that science and Christianity have been diametrically opposed since science's inception during The Renaissance. Galileo and Darwin typify the martyrs of science, persecuted by the established Church. The myth holds that science has progressed only in the teeth of ecclesiastical opposition.
