One such recent graduate from our program is Anna Linklater, who graduated in 2008 and began the process of designing for her own label Violet & I in Feb 2009. Her first collection, Open Road, launched in stores in August 2009. In setting up a fashion label, one of the critical factors is finance. Anna started by working part time to help finance the label, and also raised start-up capital from a private investor. I recently talked to Anna about how she found the fashion program useful in beginning her business and she replied with the following: "The 2-year diploma program was perfect for me. I'm a natural illustrator and designer, so it was important for me to build on the skills that weren't my strong points. As someone who had studied beforehand and didn't want to start another degree, TAFE was a great option. The skill-based learning of pattern making, sewing and textiles was so incredibly helpful to me. I was working part time in the industry in a design assistant rote whilst I studied, and that, coupled with the program, was highly beneficial. In terms of running an actual one-man show, I think there could have been more of an emphasis on the day-to-day tasks, such as how to create invoices, learning about taxes etc. But these are also things that you just have to learn on the job."
