Designer, Bethany Joy Monsted, described the news that she had been selected as a semi-finalist in the National Young Designer Awards sponsored by Myer as a "lovely surprise". Monsted revealed her unique look during the semi-final parade held recently at Canterbury Park racecourse in Sydney to coincide with the first day of the Golden Slipper Festival. "Getting that many people to see my designs was huge for me and I found out later that my model was also shown on television on Channel Seven News," she said. The main purpose for entering the competition, Monsted said, was to gain publicity and to enable her collection to be presented to a judging panel as well as high profile model, Jennifer Hawkins. "The parade was also beamed into the main arena and shown to thousands of people there on the day," she said. Monsted became involved when a public relations company organising the event contacted her, suggesting that her collection of Australian-made Bethany Joy evening, cocktail and racewear might be suitable. As she had already been considering entering the awards, their encouragement sealed her commitment.
