Transmission Tomorrow: Development of synchrophasor applications in the New Zealand grid

摘要

Recent international developments in phasor applications demonstrates the potential of using synchrophasor measurements to enhance the network visibility. Nevertheless, most of the existing literatures are primarily based on operational scenarios of large grid. Therefore, the motivation of this paper is to share New Zealand's experience, and thus provides a contrasting insight of Phasor development in relatively smaller transmission grids. The aim of this paper is to provide a summary of the present synchrophasor developments in New Zealand. Meanwhile, an overview of the path taken to establish the wide area monitoring systems and the challenges encountered during the installation period is also elaborated. Since 2007, a total of 10 phasor measurement units were installed in the New Zealand grid. Currently, applications like model validation, detection of ageing equipment, and monitoring electromechanical oscillations were successfully implemented. As part of the Transmission Tomorrow project, applications like voltage stability, state estimation and wide-area protection will be explored in future.
