摘要

Tasmania's Tamar River provided an unlikely site for the development of a lively shipbuilding industry. Construction of ocean-going ships at Launceston began in the mid-1820s and reached a peak between 1843 and 1851. The names of a number of men are commonly associated with the development of this flourishing industry; however, a problem arises in trying to identify who actually built many of these ships. It is unclear whether the 'shipbuilder' named was the person who supervised construction, the person for whom a vessel was built, the person owning the shipyard property on which an independent master shipwright built the ship, or indeed the person in whose name a ship was initially registered. In exploring this problem, this article probes the rationale and dynamics of the Tamar River shipbuilding industry, and traces its inevitable decline.
