I appreciate the interest that R French has shown in my paper and his interesting suggestions regarding the development of regional flood frequency (RFF) procedures; although I feel that his final comments are hardly justified. The four RFF procedures presented in my paper were developed individually over a 12-year period with the objective of developing more accurate procedures than those that I derived (Flavell et al, 1987) for the 1987 version of Australian Rainfall and Runoff (ARR1987) (Pilgrim, 1987). The form and the factors included in the procedures are purely a function of the quality of the available streamflow data. In particular the fact that latitude and longitude are the most significant climate factors found for the Pilbara shows that location is a better indicator of the paths of the cyclones that traverse the Pilbara than the rainfall data given in ARR1987.
