摘要

These three reports present findings of the third benchmark study of spending patterns, priorities and strategies in North American libraries. The survey was conducted in April 2013 by the Library Resource Guide (LRG) in conjunction with Unisphere Research, the market research division of Information Today. After several years of budget cutbacks, around 40 per cent of public library respondents (total 268) reported budget increases in 2012-13, outnumbering those experiencing decreases. Nearly 40% expect continued increase in budgets. Overall, 56% of public library spending is on staff. In content acquisition, around 64% is on print material, but expenditure on digital resources has doubled over the past two years. There is on-going demand for print, rising demand for ebooks and ebook readers, and increasing expectations of the role of libraries as technical training centres. Increasing the level of customer service continues to be a major priority, with focus on providing ways for patrons to make use of technology. Selecting, affording and maintaining information technology continues to be a major challenge. Cloud-computing services are used by 25% of respondents. 3D printing is offered by 4% of the largest city library respondents.
