There used to be a spate of jokes based on books made into movies, or movies turned into books (e.g. 'Watership Down: you've read the book, you've seen the movie. Now taste the stew!'). A more recent phenomenon is 'the book of the R package'. A classic of the genre is Pinheiro & Bates's (2000) showcasing of their nlme package. Such a book, if done well, can be a valuable resource for those wanting to get into an unfamiliar area of statistics, particularly if they prefer their learning of new theory to be salted by practical experience with real data analysis. This new addition to the genre is based on the JM package written by the author, and has been done well.
