The intent of this paper is not to demonstrate the art of water balancing but to impart to you some of the pitfalls I have found that are built in during the design and/or construction stage. I do not suggest that the following should be a startling revelation. Most of the problems associated with water balancing have been around for forty years to my knowledge and will probably continue for another forty. From my own experience I have found awareness to be an important ingredient in water balancing. Awareness of the system under consideration, awareness of likely problems, awareness of the measurements taken and awareness of what they mean.
