In the US, gas-fired desiccant dehumidification systems are now being specified for many supermarkets, ice arenas, and cold warehouses, with installations now numbering in the thousands. Their cost effectiveness is due to economic benefits from improved refrigerating processes resulting from introduction of drier air. Beyond these early "process-driven" niche applications, desiccant dehumidification is now being used to solve indoor air quality (IAQ) problems. In the marketplace, IAQ equates directly to outside air quantity as prescribed by ventilation tables in current standards (ASHRAE Standard 62-1999 in the US and AS 1668.2-1991 in Australia). Minimum ventilation air requirements have increased significantly in response to sick building syndrome.
