摘要

It is sometimes desired to place building insulation in the centre of a wall cavity, to get the advantage of extra air spaces in the insulation system. Recently BRANZ carried out a series of tests to determine exactly what merit this simple action might have, for a range of different edge gaps. The results are likely to be of some importance to designers, and show simple specific design criteria that will have to be met to ensure that this practice would be effective. If these limits are not met, then rather than enhancing the performance, the wall R-Value will instead be halved. The measurements in this instance concerned EPS board insulation, but previous work dealing with fibreglass and reflective laminates is also referred to.
