Through the stimulus provided by a decade of demand-side management programs, stratified chilled water storage has developed into a sophisticated and widely used technology for thermal load shifting in large cooling systems in the US. This paper reviews and synthesises lessons from the US experience developed both through research and application. Key characteristics of successful systems are discussed, including appropriate applications, system operation to exploit energy and energy cost savings opportunities, and use of thermal storage for improved chilled water system management. Important design considerations are also summarised, including recognition of thermal and hydraulic system integration issues, the need to understand the owner's requirements, how storage fits into the existing operation of systems when done as a retrofit, and the importance of commissioning and post-commissioning review of system performance. Major points are illustrated with examples drawn from successful systems and from recent research.
