Chilled ceiling is an overseas concept that is proving to be an effective solution to the increasing demand for energy efficient systems that also improve the indoor environment. This paper addresses the basic principles and application of different types of chilled ceiling available on the European market; components of fresh air supply; advantages of chilled ceiling for new and refurbishment work; reduction in mechanical services space requirements - significant when there is restricted false ceiling access; maintenance; and compares relative investment costs for chilled ceiling, fan coil and VAV systems. The paper concludes with a discussion of European design guidelines and illustrated examples of existing projects that could lead to the adoption of this technology in Australia and New Zealand in response to climate change.
