Tests are reported using the original test rig with a R23/R134a blend. Despite the wide boiling range the unit worked well and gave COP values in the range 3.5 to 4.4. The unit was re-vamped to incorporate new condenser and evaporator designs together with a new patented control system which required a single section evaporator in place of the split unit. The new unit was tested with a CO_2/R134a blend and two ternary blends. Based on these test results air conditioning units are proposed using the R32/R227 mixture which could give COP values of 4 to 5. A review is presented of the challenge of using mixed refrigerants with the proposed novel control system in water chilling, vehicle air conditioning and process applications.
