Provisional findings from an investigation of occupant perceptions of thermal comfort and indoor air quality in eight office buildings in Sydney and its suburbs are presented. One of them is ventilated through the windows with supplementary heating but no cooling; another is ventilated through the windows but has supplementary on-demand cooling and heating; the remainder are air conditioned. Substantial levels of dissatisfaction were found in most of the buildings. Reference is made to selection of temperature settings and ventilation arrangements in another building where occupants are able to make individual choices. An alternative approach to the control of the thermal environment to improve acceptance is suggested.
