Asking customers the wrong questions can create tension, damage customer-satisfaction scores, reduce gross profits, and even kill a sale entirely, says training consultant David Martin, president of The MarKee Group. "Customers are preconditioned to answer certain questions in a way that doesn't allow you to get at their buying motives," he adds. "When you ask questions differently, you release those defense mechanisms and are more likely to get a positive response."
