The February issue Market Trends entitled "Why the Fleet Manager Should be the Gatekeeper to Procurement" was a great editorial. Ironically, companies that have fleets of material handling equipment (MHE) are even more challenged because they don't have dedicated corporate fleet managers or a "gatekeeper" to work with their procurement teams. Each facility typically runs its own decentralized fleet program that usually is not managed very well. When procurement teams do get involved with MHE, they are confused on what "fleet management" is and what can be improved besides just negotiating better maintenance rates from service vendors. A good fleet management SaaS (software as a service) platform can engage management, drive accountability, improve efficiency, increase productivity and ultimately reduce TCO.
