Greg Freeman, owner of Greg Freeman Auto Center, Joplin, Missouri, wears many hats. In a typical week, he can be found attending a vehicle salvage pool auction, supervising construction of a storage facility and buying a load of bathroom vanities at a railroad auction. That's what comes from owning three different businesses ― the auto recycling facility, along with Freeman Mini-Storage and Freeman Annex ― an off-price outlet for home improvement and miscellaneous merchandise. For Freeman and his wife, Shirley, expanding beyond the professional automotive recycling business is part of their long-range plans. They had been in the auto recycling business for more than 20 years (their first operation was in Carthage, Missouri), when in 1995, they asked themselves some hard questions. Both in their mid-40s at the time, they began looking ahead to retirement. Their two sons were both successful in other fields and did not have an interest in taking over the automotive recycling business, so the Freemans knew they needed to explore other options.
