The world we see is rich in dynamic range and colour, which doesn't always translate accurately from camera to display. The emerging High Dynamic Range (HDR) display system aims to resolve this challenge, bringing the content we see on screens closer to the Human Vision System (HVS) to show the world as we view it - starting with a larger camera dynamic range available today at source, through the production chain and ultimately for the best quality presentation on HDR-optimised displays. With displays becoming more accessible and colour science standards more refined, HDR has become a topic of interest among AV professionals, largely because of its promise to deliver a more cinematic look for displays at everything from concerts to sporting events, houses of worship and conference rooms. LED displays typically used in AV have long had high nits or brightness values, so HDR is uniquely positioned to exploit those capabilities with the added benefit of Wide Colour Gamut (WCG) for more pleasing large screen displays in live AV settings.
