Sound has long had a place on campus and in the classroom but, thirty to forty years ago, it was usually brought in - or wheeled in as was the case of record players in boxes on casters or tape machines on a trolley - and not a permanent, integrated part of the teaching area. Recording studios were the preserve of specialist establishments and courses, such as the Tonmeister at the University of Surrey and radio journalism training provided by the London College of Printing and Falmouth Technical College.
