Continental yesterday said it is setting up a voluntary carbon offsetting program, allowing its customers to make donations related to the amount of emissions generated from their trips. A handful of carriers has already introduced voluntary off-setting programs, but the concept has been quicker to catch on in Europe than in the U.S. Continental's program was developed in partnership with Sustainable Travel International. Continental believes this is the first time a U.S. carrier has used a "calculator-based" offsetting program, an airline spokeswoman said. "Other U.S. airlines have worked with environmental groups to offer donation programs for tree planting, but ours is the first actual carbon offset calculator among U.S. airlines," she said.
