When the aircraft carriers Akagi, Kaga, Soryu and Hiryu of the Japanese Combined Fleet launched their planes to attack Midway Atoll on June 4,1942, they found its U.S. Navy, Marine and Army Air Forces defenders alerted and ready. American fighters were up, although their pilots were overwhelmed by the carrier bombers' Mitsubishi A6M2 Zero escorts. Even while Midway endured an aerial pounding, a variety of bombers and attack planes based there made a valiant but ultimately vain attempt to bomb or torpedo the Japanese carriers.
