After an amazing careerthat included combat missions over the jungles of Vietnam, a North American F-100 Super Sabre has been given a well-deserved place of honor at an Iowa Air National Guard base. The F-100C, tail No. 54005, arrived at the 174th Tactical Fighter Squadron in Sioux City, Iowa, in June 1961. The 174th was part of the 185th Tactical Fighter Group (now the 185th Air Refueling Wing, equipped with Boeing KC-135 tankers). The plane was the first of 18 F-100s received by the unit as it began a conversion from the RF-84F Thunderflash. In 1968 the unit was activated in response to the attack on the U.S. spy ship Pueblo off the coast of North Korea on January 23. The unit was part of a call-up of 14,600 Air and Army National Guard and Reserve members. On May 14,350 men and the 18 F-100s left Sioux City for Phu Cat Air Base, South Vietnam. The 174th would spend a year flying low-level night missions, using the call sign "Bat."
