Douglas Aircraft Company of Santa Monica, Long Beach and El Segundo, California, was indisputably one of the premier builders of tactical aircraft during World War Ⅱ. The A-20 Havoc (1939) and A-26 Invader (1942), for example, were arguably the best attack-light bomber aircraft in their class. Douglas sought to push the envelope even further when it instigated a company-funded study in early 1943, charging designer Ed Burton and his staff with the job of coming up with a new plane that possessed speed and range comparable to the new Boeing B-29 Superfortress, yet would be considerably smaller and lighter―as well as a lot cheaper. While Douglas was putting its design proposal together, the multiengine tactical bombardment aircraft in service with the U.S. Army Air Forces (USAAF) at the time―namely, the Douglas A-20, the North American B-25 and the Martin B-26 (the A-26 would not reach combat units until late 1944)―were 50 to 100 mph slower than most enemy fighters, possessed service ceilings well below 30,000 feet and had combat radii in the neighborhood of 600 miles. Under combat conditions, early experience with these types had shown that fighter protection en route to and from the targets was absolutely essential. If a new type of tactical bomber was to be developed with sufficient range to reach deeper targets, past the normal operational radius of a fighter escort, it would need to be pretty darned fast and high flying.
