摘要

The Boeing B-29 Bock's Car sent a strong message to the Japanese high command on August 9, 1945, when it dropped the second atom bomb, "Fat Man," on Nagasaki, vaporizing the city. When there was no response from Japan, conventional bombing resumed on August 14 with a raid by 754 B-29s, escorted by 169 fighters. That massive raid by the Twentieth Air Force would spell the death knell of World War Ⅱ. At about the same time, the U.S. Navy was preparing to launch its newest and last wartime piston-engine fighter design, the Grumman F8F-1 Bearcat. Despite the new fighter's sterling performance, the atom bomb and the advent of the turbojet would soon make it obsolete.
