The oil painting Against All Odds is my depiction, based on firsthand experience, of what it was like to fight the controls of an Avro Lancaster bomber with three engines shot out, plummeting toward the ground over World War Ⅱ Germany. The incident took place on the night of August 12-13, 1944, just after we left behind our target, Russelsheim. Our crew, of seven had come together at the Royal Air Force base at Santoft in March 1944 to start our training on four-engine heavy bombers, Handley Page Halifaxes. I served as the pilot, joined by flight engineer Sergeant Stan Waind, navigator Pilot Officer Alex Kabbash, bomb aimer Sergeant Tom Wade, wireless operator Sergeant Sid Davidson, mid-upper gunner Sergeant "Elsy" Elsworth and rear gunner Sergeant Norman Smith. We moved on to Lancasters in May at RAF Hemswell. After 11 days of becoming familiar with the Lancaster, we were posted to No. 101 Special Duties Squadron at Ludford Magna, Lincolnshire, where we picked up our eighth crew member, Sergeant Peter Holway. He was a German-speaking radio operator, specially trained to operate the highly secret ABC radio countermeasures equipment that the squadron aircraft carried.
