On the east coast of Australia in the early fall of 1924, heavy rain and mist cut visibility to a few hundred yards. The peaks of large waves broke as they rose steeply off a looming cliff face. A small silver seaplane appeared, groping its way through the murk, angled toward the rock face. At the last second the pilot banked sharply to avoid a crash, then straightened out to disappear into the gloom along the coast. The hair-raising episode occurred early on during a survey flight that called for a Fairey IIID seaplane and its Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) crew to circumnavigate Australia. Of the many miles that would be covered during the flight, 2,500 were flown in bad condi-tions: torrential rain, high winds and low visibility. And as survey leader Stanley James "Jimmie" Goble recalled, "Our problems began early."
