摘要

At the onset of its involvement in World War II, one of the crucial tasks for the United States was guarding coastal shipping and North Atlantic convoys against German submarine attacks. Some protection was afforded by the Civil Air Patrol, which launched daylight offshore patrols that targeted Axis subs along the Atlantic and Pacific coasts and in the Gulf of Mexico. In early 1942, however, the inability to provide an adequate defense against U-boat "wolf packs" in the North Atlantic resulted in a period of devastating losses―and sent authorities scrambling to find effective methods to deliver daylight air observation ahead of the convoys. The Brodie system was an attempt to do just that, using lightplanes. First Lieutenant James H. Brodie of the U.S. Army Field Artillery came up with an idea for a device that would enable observation planes to be based on ships. By early 1943, he had developed a prototype design in which a light aircraft, equipped with a hook on a framework above the cockpit, could land on a ship by snagging a horizontal cable suspended from the ship's masts. A system of trolleys suspended on the cable enabled planes to take off as well.
