R.J. Mcwhorter, an eastern Washington cattle rancher and aircraft restorer, was flying into Twin Falls, Idaho, one day in the early 1960s when something on the ground caught his eye. He later recalled: "After landing, I looked down across the field there when I was getting some fuel, and I saw this airplane. And I thought, that's a C-3B, sure enough." A commercial pilot, McWhorter identified the biplane in part because of its cabane struts, which connect the fuselage to the upper wing center section. "This airplane is beautiful because it has lots of clearance between the fuselage and the center section," said McWhorter. "A lot of the old airplanes were real close in there, but the Stear-man C-3B, noted for its attractive lines, isn't."
