There's an old saying: "If you think training is expensive, try ignorance," and nowhere is it more appropriate than in nondestructive testing (NDT). Largely an unregulated industry, except for critical specific areas such as aviation and nuclear energy, NDT abounds with untrained or poorly trained people operating NDT equipment in the field. A good rule of thumb is if the price of an inspection is really cheap, there's probably a good reason for it. "You know, there really isn't a good reason for technicians to not get proper training," said Chuck Hellier, president of Niantic, Connecticut-based Hellier Associates. "There are no special prerequisites to take these courses beyond a knowledge of basic math and physics."
