The dot.coms bragged that the giant distribution companies like Aviall were dinosaurs doomed to inevitable failure as the Internet allowed customers to communicate directly with manufacturers. Who needs a distributor between a manufacturer and the consumer, taking a cut of the action? was the rallying cry that erupted from the past year's dot.com mania. As it turned out, many consumers and manufacturers found that they did indeed need distributors to grease the purchasing process. Setting up a website to sell parts is easy to do, but the back-office job of fulfilling orders is much more difficult. Amazon.com ended up building huge warehouses all over the U.S. to handle the growing volume of online sales that it generated. Some dot.corns went bankrupt due to lack of ability to serve customers and ended up selling their few assets to established regular firms. Aviall is well established and has been in the parts distribution business for a long time, with origins dating back to 1932. The company has shed its non-core businesses in recent years and is poised to continue growing. In October, Aviall announced that it planned to buy Superior Air Parts, a relatively small competitor in the parts distribution field, but nevertheless a company with a brand name in the piston engine parts manufacturing business. (see sidebar page 26). During an interview for this story, CEO Paul Fulchino hinted that Aviall is poised to unleash further acquisition efforts.
