When the newly revamped Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) opened in 1967, the airport had grand plans to become one of the world's biggest hubs. Resident airline KLM Royal Dutch Airlines wanted an aircraft to match these ambitions and, likemany of the world's carriers at the time, looked across the Atlantic to American manufacturer Boeing and its mighty 747.KLM had never operated Boeing jets before but on June 27,1967 the then-CEO and president Dr Gerrit Van Der Wal placed an initial order for three 747-100s, making KLM the 15th airline in the world to sign up for the new 'jumbo jet'.
