The idea for an aerial display team was first raised in 1959 when the Surveillance Wing was asked to start training for a double patrol with four Hawker Siddeley Hunter F.58s. The public debut was at Biel on June 2, 1960 and involved a series of formation passes. In 1963 authorisation was recived to start intensive training as a display team involving a true display routine. The Patrouille Suisse was officially created on August 22, 1964, its name derived from its French counterpart, Patrouille de France. That year it performed at the Swiss Air Force's 50th anniversary and Expo64, a national exhibition held in Lausanne in 1964, as well as numerous other locations around Switzerland. The Federal Department of Defence acknowledged the promotional value of the formation flights and decided to appoint the Patrouille Suisse as the country's official team.
