It's important for individual pilots to embrace the risk management concepts outlined on the opposite page and elsewhere in this article. Individual behavior changes are critical but are unlikely to significantly improve the general aviation fatal accident rate unless there is a cultural change in safety attitudes within the entire community. Thankfully, some progress is occurring in this arena. In May 2011, the Society of Aviation and Flight Educators (SAFE) conducted a Pilot Training Reform Symposium in Atlanta (see my article in the July 2011 issue of Aviation Safety) in which risk management themes were emphasized. In addition, the FAA and the NTSB-plus general aviation organizations, including AOPA and EAA-have recently revitalized their national collaborative efforts to develop risk mitigation strategies.
