AIRBALTIC is the world’s secondlargest operator of A220s,aftyer Delta, 31 currently inits fleet and another 19 scheduledfor delivery over the next two years.It is a truly niche airline operating ahub and spoke system at Riga, thecapital of Latvia. It also has bases atthe Estonian capital Tallinn and theLithuanian capital Vilnius.These three capitals are small incomparison to the main populationcentres in Denmark, Norway, Swedenand Finland, yet the core strategy isto capture passengers to/from thecountries and funnel the thin flowsthrough Riga to cities in western,southern and eastern Europe andeven the Middle East; pre‐pandemic,about 44% of airBaltic’s passengersconnected through Riga. Tallinn andVilnius are essentially point‐to‐pointoperations with only two or threeaircraft based at each airport.
