Reducing the time between detecting and striking a target has been a problem for decades, but now that interval is collapsing— driven by a dramatic increase in the speed with which digital networks can shift data and images around the battlefield. The big remaining problem is to make all of these entities talk to one another. Link 16 and the Joint Tacti-cal Radio System (JTRS) are broadband communication conduits that promise to make network-centric warfare work, but they're taking many years to reach operational status. In contrast, Northrop Grumman researchers say they have demonstrated that similar systems, assembled from off-the-shelf components, can be working in as little as 18 months.
