Just how many federal airport screen-air travelers safe and whether they button issues for lawmakers and security experts. The federal airport screener force is capped by law at 45,000, although when full- and part-time employment is factored in, the actual number is more like 43,500. Several key congressmen think there are too many screeners. They have been urging the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to use more high-tech baggage screening equipment that will require fewer workers drawing a federal salary.
