Conflicts where a few soldiers will dominate state-size battlefields are being planned into the development of the U.S. Air Force's high-demand arsenal of unmanned aircraft. Also part of the new formula will be stealth, directed-energy weapons and new reserve combat units. The UAV center of excellence, now based here, is "going to be our way of drawing the unmanned part of [the Air Force] together and having a one-stop shop that takes a look at all the possibilities for common operating systems and the best ways to use UAVs," says Maj. Gen. Stephen M. Goldfein, commander of the Air Warfare Center at Nellis. The AWC develops tactics for the use of aircraft and directs combat training. It is host to the new UAV center, which is located at Creech AFB on the Nevada Test Ranges north of Nellis.
