British forces in Iraq are increasingly turning to helicopter and fixed-wing transport in response to the growing threat of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) against ground vehicles. The risk from roadside bombs has grown markedly in the past 6-8 weeks, and since July, six British soldiers have been killed in three incidents in the region. The IEDs are also becoming more sophisticated. This turn of events has force commanders now transporting troops via air, if possible, where previously they would have been comfortable deploying them by road. Some military officials say this element of transport has grown by at least 20% in the past couple of months. All three types of helicopters deployed here—Lynx Mk7, Merlin HC3, and Sea King Mk4—were also used in the recent operation to free two British soldiers, likely Special Forces. The rescue operation saw the use of a still-sensitive helicopter-mounted surveillance system, known as Broadsword.
